He was even less encouraged when, a week later, enraged over rising prices and putative plots to starve the people, a crowd lynched an official named Foulon and paraded his head on a pike with hay stuffed in its mouth for presumed complicity in the plotting. A band of rioters then marched his son-in-law through the streets with his father-in-law’s head in front of him, shouting, “Kiss your papa, kiss your papa.” They murdered him, too, tore his heart out, threw it at the Hôtel de Ville, and resumed their parade with the young man’s head beside the older one’s. This, they proclaimed, was how traitors would be punished.

On the night of the 14th of July, many in Paris danced and sang in the torchlit streets around the Bastille. They danced and sang the carmagnole. Some of the words went like this:
