Olivia felt a sense of déjà vu as she boarded the plane to LA, except this time, it felt good. On her way to England, her stomach had been twisted up in knots, and she had been terrified that she would never see Brock again. This time, she was by his side, sitting in a window seat and feeling glad that soon they would be home again—or at least on the same continent as home. Things weren’t perfect, but she was certainly happier than when she had arrived in England. Brock was alive and safe, and that was more important than anything else to her.

She glanced to her right to see how he was doing. Brock seemed to have cheered up a little, flicking through the in-flight magazine in the pocket of the chair in front of him.

“You know what I’d really love right now?” he mused. “An ice-cold beer. It feels like forever since I’ve had one.”

“Go wild,” Olivia told him. “It’s going to be a long flight. Might as well have some fun along the way.”

“I like the way you think. And what will you be having?”

“You know what? I’ll have a beer too. I kicked down a bunch of doors and blew up some stuff—I deserve one.”

“Alright, two cold beers coming up ASAP,” he grinned. “And it’s on me. I think I at least owe you a drink for saving my life.”

“Well, I won’t argue with that,” Olivia replied with a smile. “Maybe while we’re waiting for the drink cart you can fill me in on what you know about Eve.”

Brock sighed. “Here I was forgetting what a workaholic you are. Olivia, we have like ten hours. And then we transfer in New York for another six-hour flight to LA. The last thing we should be doing is trying to solve a case. We should be trying to eat every snack on board, watching movies, sleeping so we can avoid jetlag...”

Olivia raised an eyebrow at him. “Do you even know me at all? I find working a case to be much more relaxing than any of those things.”

“That’s because you’re crazy. Come on, Olivia. I thought when you agreed to have a beer that you would loosen up a bit.”

“You’re the one who got all pouty because you wanted to be the one to solve it,” Olivia reminded him. Brock’s expression turned a little sour, and Olivia knew she’d said the wrong thing. He tried to cover up his irritation with a smile.

“I do want to solve it. But I also want to kick back for a while. You know, flights are kind of like limbo—a liminal space between real life and something else. You’re not where you’re from, you’re not where you’re going, you’re not really anywhere. You’re not meant to put your brain to work on a plane. It’s just not right.”

“I’ll make you a deal,” Olivia said. “You tell me everything you know about Eve and her case so far. Then, we can watch a movie together.
