When North rebid 3H, he showed a two-suited hand with hearts and spades. Despite holding only three-card support, South appreciated that his values were well placed – ♠Q10 and ♥K10 must all be useful cards, so he bid 4H. Although it turns out not to be, even K♦ could have been working for North-South.

Notice that North did not get over-excited. His partner could have held fewer values and in less useful places. To rebid 3H was ample.

In this instance, South did not worry about only holding an eight-card trump fit. This is because he was sure that his side held a double fit – two eight-card fits or longer – and a double fit always produces extra tricks.

West led 3♠, which could have been brilliant but which usually, with a singleton trump, will not be. This sorted out the spade position for South, who could now play trumps from the top and make with some ease.
