Chapter 20

Plum went to her room to freshen up before dinner. She sent Captain Diaz a quick email, informing him Suki seemed genuinely surprised about the accusation that she had sold her necklace at Laszlo’s. He wrote her back that he was working on getting footage from the surrounding store cameras to see if they could figure out who it was. When she finished with him, she checked her phone and saw Juan Kevin had texted her.

Arne Larsen bought the house in East Hampton next to David Gifford. It was the only one recently sold.

It was confirmation that Harris was lying. She wasn’t surprised. But did Robert know this? Did everyone see through him? It was bizarre that they all carried on this facade. She quickly texted Juan Kevin back a thank-you emoji and then, without thinking, added a heart. Before she could regret it, he immediately responded with a heart. She smiled.

She became carried away with fantasies of the two of them together. She imagined them riding horses on the beach, clad all in white, like they were posing for the cover of a romance novel. They would lie on the rocks, entwined and feeding each other grapes. The surf would lap at them, but they would not have a care in the world.

Plum’s phone buzzed, interrupting her reverie. She checked it. Big mistake. All the daydreams immediately dissipated when she read the email from Lucia. Even though Lucia had prefaced the email with Don’t Freak Out in the subject line, the warning was lost on Plum. Apparently, Damián had been successful at persuading Barbara Copeland to list her villa with him. Before she could even think straight, Plum dialed Damián’s cell phone. He answered on the first ring, and she spoke before he could even say hello.

“Listen here, you perfidious snake! How dare you steal my client. I worked long and hard to get Barbara Copeland to even consider renting her villa. And then you swoop in and steal her from me. What kind of mongrel are you? You are a lowlife. Totally incapable of doing anything for yourself. But I can tell you, your pathetic greasy charm won’t work any longer. I will expose you as what you are! A dog-hating, womanizing, pathetic, useless, incapable loser. That’s right!”

There was breathing on the other end of the phone but no response. Finally, a bitter laughter erupted. “Plum, is that you, my old friend and colleague?”

“You know it is,” hissed Plum. “But I’m not old.”

She knew her response was as pathetic as it sounded, but there was something about Damián that riled her up so intensely that she could not even think before she spoke.

She heard a clucking from Damián, which drove her into a rage. “Plum, Plum, Plum,” he said. “It is clear I have upset you. This is so much emotion from one person. I am responsible for so much passion from you. For that I am sorry.”

“You don’t elicit passion, you moron!” she raged.

“Darling Plum. No one wants to make you unhappy, least of all me,” cooed Damián.
