âExcuse me,â one of them said. âI couldnât help but notice, you look like you are from the North.â
âAye,â the captainâs wife said sadly as her daughters continued to wail behind her.
While the Britts may have been dressed in southern clothes, they could not mask their northern heritage. The southerners were tanned while the Britts were pale. The southerners had golden hair while the Britts had brown. And while the southerners walked gracefully, like they were floating on wind, the Britts plodded and clunked about like a drove of pigs moving through mud.
âThen perhaps you should go to Turnip Town,â the southern woman said.
The Britt sisters stopped crying and glared at the woman who had made the suggestion.
âWe canât go to Turnip Town,â Ina snapped.
âTurnips are vegetables,â Berit pointed out.
âAnd we hate vegetables!â Sissel cried.
âYes. Vegetables are disgusting!â the remaining sisters yelled. And then they wailed even louder.
âIndeed they are,â the southern woman agreed. âBut along with turnips there is also a prince in Turnip Town, and I have a feeling he would like all of you very much.â
âItâs true,â said the woman standing beside her. âYou girls are just Prince Manfredâs type.â
âReally?â said the captainâs wife. She stepped away from her daughters and closer to the southern ladies. âAnd this prince, tell me, is he rich?â
âOh, yes,â they both said at once. âOne of the richest in the South. Rich off the sale of turnips.â
âTheyâre a delicacy down here,â added a man passing through the crowd.
The captainâs wife jumped with delight. âDonât worry, girls,â she said. âIâve found another one. A richer one. Come on. Back in the carriage. Weâre off to Turnip Town.â
