Ben pulled to a stop in our parking lot and leaned over to give me a kiss before I got out with Razzy. His eyes met mine and I could tell he was trying to work everything out in his head, just like I was.

“I’m going to see if I can find anything in the old evidence lockers,” Ben said. “It was a long time ago, but we have an archive section. I want to know what’s in there.”

“I’m going to track down a few things on my end. Hopefully, between the two of us, we’ll find some answers.”

“Um, I think you’re forgetting someone,” Razzy said from her carrier.

“Sorry, the three of us.”

“See you later, Hannah. Stay out of trouble.”

I snorted before shutting the door.

“Yeah, that sounds nothing like me.”

Ben laughed as he pulled away, and I walked inside with Razzy, trying to figure out my next steps. Rudy’s head popped up over the couch and he launched himself towards us.

“Hooray, you’re back. What did you find out? Was it anything interesting?”

He chased his tail around for a second before coming to a stop in front of us, chest heaving. I let Razzy out of her bag and peered over the top of the couch to see Gus. He was stretched out with a paw over his face. I glanced over at Razzy and she heaved an enormous sigh before nodding once in my direction.

“Rudy, do you want me to stay home today?” she asked.

I smiled, knowing that she’d much rather be with me and admiring her for helping poor Gus. The exhausted cat looked like he needed a break from babysitting duties.

“Yeah, that would be awesome. Come on, let’s play the lap game again.”

Razzy shook her head and shot me a look that said there’d better be some tasty treats in her near future before following him into the living room. I grabbed my keys and opened the door again.

“Love you guys, be good.”

“Bye, Ma,” Rudy said as he skittered past. “See you later.”

I closed the door on the ruckus and walked to my Blazer, grateful that our apartment building was newer and had good soundproofing. It was also good we were on the ground floor. I pitied anyone who lived beneath Rudy’s rampaging feet.

As I drove to the newspaper office, I went back through the interview in my head. There had to be some way to figure out who was telling the truth. From the vision I’d had, it sure looked like Debbie was being chased, but was that the truth? I let out a groan, frustrated by all the twists and turns of this case.

I walked past Ashley’s cubicle and waved, giving her a big smile. She was on the phone again, and from her expression it looked like she’d rather be doing something else. As I walked past the glass windows of Tom’s office, I noticed he had a man sitting across from him.

“Hannah, come in here,” Tom said, barking out the command.

I stuck my head in the door and smiled at his guest.
