Chapter Thirty-Four

We had to help Tetyana, but the Subaru was useless.

Its front tires were flat and its windows had been blown right off. The Red Beast was back from the repair shop and had amazing horsepower and was armored, but that would be like using an elephant to run after a cheetah. We’d never catch up to the bikes.

David was removing the chains on his Yamaha when we heard Katy call out from inside.

“Guys! Get in here!”

David left his bike and we dashed inside.

Katy was in the bakery’s reception room, her hair as wild as flames around her. “The dojo!” she said, pointing to the connecting door. “I heard a loud crash just now!”

I noticed Katy had shut the house alarm off. The screeching had stopped and it was deadly quiet inside the building.

We listened in for a few seconds.

Nothing.

“Asha, cover me,” said David. He turned to Katy. “Barricade the back door.”

“What about everyone?” I said, glancing up the stairway. Both bedroom doors were still closed.

“They’re good,” Katy said. “Checked on them just now.”

A siren sounded in the distance.

Did someone call the police?

I stepped up to the window quickly.

There wasn’t a soul on the streets, but a few lights had come on in the apartment block in front of us. Our fracas had probably woken half the neighborhood. I was surprised a SWAT team hadn’t already barged in.

A line of neighborhood cars was parked alongside the road as usual. Nothing looked amiss except for the dark brown van with tinted windows at the end of the block. I tried to remember if I’d seen it before.

“Let’s go,” said David.

Leaving Katy in the bakery, David and I stepped toward the dojo.

Apart from David’s office and our War Room hidden in the back, there were two changing rooms with toilets and showers. Most of the space in the dojo was taken up by the open gym. The floor was lined with thick wall-to-wall grappling mats. A smattering of gym equipment, including punching bags and Bob, the Rubber Man, sat along the perimeter of the room.

There were cameras everywhere here except for the change rooms. It would be next to impossible for anyone to hide in there.

David opened the door to the dojo quietly. I stood on the other side, gun trained forward, my throat dry, ready for an intruder to pounce on us.

He pulled the door open and we moved in, shouting, “Freeze!”

Nothing.

David flicked the lights on.

The dojo was empty.

We glanced around. Nothing looked unusual.

David walked over to the office and rattled the doorknob. It was secured with a biometric lock and a keypad. No one could get in there other than one of us, using our thumbprints and the secret code.

We turned our attention to the change rooms. That was the only place someone could remain hidden. We treaded quietly over the mats and jumped inside each room, shouting, threatening to shoot as we did.

But there was no one.

What did Katy hear?

We panned the room.

“Jeepers,” said David suddenly, pointing at the window.
