Chapter Sixteen

Whew, that was close. Vickie slipped into the library a second before the bell rang in the hallway. She paused to absorb the usual atmosphere that always appealed to her—the thick silence that hung in the air, the line of librarians checking books in and out, and the pockets of students huddled at tables and in lounge chairs reading books.

I miss this place. She cracked a half-smile. It’s been months since I’ve been here. This is such a cool atmosphere for studying. And there’s why I haven’t been coming here. Her gaze settled on Tricia, who was seated at a table and chatted with a freshman boy.

The vampire didn’t recognize the boy but he wore a wrinkled, dirty flannel shirt and khaki shorts that clearly hadn’t been washed in a few wears. He was deeply interested in everything Tricia had to say and the girl, having a rapt audience, rambled on.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Vickie walk past. She tried to continue talking but was thrown off by the distraction. Their eyes met, and they exchanged polite but cold smiles.

Inside, it hurt her to see Tricia. Her once-friend looked like she hadn’t slept in weeks and her clothes were enough on the ragged side to be noticeable. Huge bags hung under her eyes and her skin was pale.

She had to keep walking but all she wanted to do was stop and help her. But how could she?

The girl still didn’t believe she needed any help. In contrast to the vampire’s inner turmoil, she was fine with the fact that Vickie kept walking. She didn’t want to see her anyway. In her mind, she had simply tried to be a good friend to her, a new girl who needed friends.

But even though she had tried to show her a good time in her own way, they hadn’t hung out or even really spoke since Tricia had her over to her house. It was for the best.

I wonder what’s wrong with her. What is she into now? Did her boyfriend get her hooked on something? I wish I could get her out of that environment, but I don’t even know where I would go with her. Vickie shook it off and turned the doorknob on the study room on the outside wall of the library.

Waiting inside were two of the three members of the presentation group she was a part of for phys-ed class. Sam Trissel sat with a blank notebook page open in front of him. Emily Zimmerman spun back and forth in one of the desk chairs surrounding the small meeting table and smiled widely when she walked in.

“Hey, Vickie!”

“Hi, guys.” She stepped in, pulled a seat up at the table, and dropped her backpack on the floor beside her. “Where’s Adam?”

“He’s not here yet.” Sam was a polite young man and a little on the quiet side. She wasn’t sure how well the four of them would work together but she was more worried about Adam than Sam.
