Chapter 36

Claire rushed home after the meditation session. She had promised Seijun she would practice, and he’d said he would send her a text with the Insight Timer app he’d used. She would have her own little tinkling bell to time her sessions.

At home she showered and changed into pink jeans and a breezy, striped tunic. If she hurried, she would just make her eleven o’clock appointment. She ran back down the stairs, hopped in the car and tore down Lemon Drive towards 30A. In the rearview mirror, she checked that the garage door and gate were closed. She was five minutes down the road when she realized she had left behind the box of purses she’d planned to show the new client. Furious with herself, she turned around in a gas station parking lot and headed back home. She was going to be late for the appointment now. Hopefully she could salvage it.

As she raced around the dunes, she spotted a birdwatcher crouched by a hillock of sand and scrub grass. She’d seen them around before, in the woods and on the beach. Funny, though, this guy seemed to be zeroing in on Citrus Haven.

She looked ahead to the house. The gate was open and a dark blue van was parked near the front door. The garage door nearest the entrance was open and a man was coming out, carrying a box. As she got closer, she could read the signage on the van. Pool Service and Repair.

She drove up beside the van and got out of her car. “Hi,” she said, trying to keep her voice friendly. “What are you doing?”

The man, Hispanic and on the short side, flashed a big smile. “Check water pipe.” He nodded towards the open garage door and placed the box in the back of the van. Then another man came out with another box. His face went blank when he saw Claire. The first guy said, “No problems. All set.” He smiled again. Then he reached into the truck and began to reel in some tubing. Claire took a couple of steps around the van and saw that the tubing stretched towards the pool.

The second man shut the garage door using the keypad. Finished with the tubing, the first man slammed the van’s double doors. With more smiles, both men got in the truck and took off. Everything had happened so fast, Claire had said nothing and done nothing. On the other hand, she was just a tenant in the coach house. She didn’t have the right to question these men. As they drove away, she wondered what was in those boxes they’d hoisted into the van.

Frustrated and perplexed, she raced up to her apartment to grab the box of purses she’d prepared. Then she was back in the car and on her way. She glanced over at the dunes and saw they were empty now. It was too bad because she could see a hawk careen through the sky in a dizzying spiral.
