Chapter Twenty-Two
I quietly make my way through the trees, closely watching every step so as not to bring my foot down on a decaying branch or dry twig that might give away my presence. The forest is thick around me and makes the going slow, but I am not in a hurry.
Ducking my head around a protruding limb, I step past a wide, moss-covered boulder and continue my progress. Up ahead, I see a break in the trees, which tells me that Iâve finally arrived at my destination. Moving around an evergreen tree, I crouch down and inch forward until Iâm right beside the dirt driveway. I reach out and carefully push away the nearest branch.
I see her.
My heart beats faster. She is sitting on the front porch, deep in conversation, laughing at something that the man next to her said.
Iâll have to be especially careful now. The police have brought her in to solve Kaylaâs murder. She is an excellent agent and clearly knows what sheâs doing. She has already been to both Kaylaâs house and Lilyâs house and continues to ask all the right questions.
I watch her as she rocks back and forth in the chair, oblivious to my presence as she listens to him talk. I watch them for a long time, relishing the scene as adrenaline courses through me.
It has been such a long wait. So very long. But when everything has been said and done, the wait will have been worth it. A man can hold out forever if he knows that he will see his desire fulfilled at the end of it all. Hope is one of the most powerful motivators in the world and is what has kept me so patient all this time; the knowledge that one day I would get what was taken from me.
He says something that makes her laugh again, and she looks over at him like she is enjoying his company. They can laugh and relax tonight. They can sit there and talk and enjoy the sight of the setting sun. Soon enough, Iâll disrupt everyoneâs world again. It has already begun. But I have something more in store for them all, and this town deserves everything I have planned.
My entire body tingles with the thrill of anticipation. All the years that have gone by, all the years of waiting and then waiting some more, they are finally over. Kayla will always have a special place in my heart. She was the one who got things started for me, this scheme that I have waited so long to unfold. Kayla didnât know it, of course, but that doesnât really matter. She was the first domino to fall.
The rest will follow soon.
