Chapter Seventeen
Will and Alexis stood on the walkway that ran along the Milwaukee River and stared at a statue with a gold-orange hue.
The evening was relatively quiet. Not too many people were out and about—exactly the way she had hoped when she’d planned it. It’ll be perfect. No interruptions. He and I can talk about things. And it’ll be a peaceful night.
The river was white, frozen over and covered with a blanket of snow. The sky was clear and quiet. Besides the occasional winter runner, they had the Riverwalk to themselves.
She wore her biggest smile in a last-ditch effort to get Will to show any kind of emotion. For all his smoldering, pretty-boy looks, getting a smile out of him was like pulling teeth.
She threw her arms around the grinning statue with its thumbs jutting outward. “It’s hard to believe he was this short, right?”
Will shook his head. “I don’t know who this is.”
She lowered her arms. “Seriously? The Fonz? You’ve never heard of The Fonz?”
The smiling statue was The Bronze Fonz, a unique little attraction installed on the Riverwalk years before to pay tribute to the Happy Days character. Everyone in Milwaukee had, at one time or another, visited The Bronze Fonz and laughed while they took their picture in his iconic Ayyyyy pose.
Everyone, of course, except Will. “I don’t get it.”
Alexis sighed. Movies don’t work. Jokes don’t work. Dances don’t work. He won’t even laugh at silly little stuff like this. “Will, we have to talk.”
They turned and walked along the river close together so she could stay warm.
“Will, why do you want to be with me?” A lump had already formed in her throat. This was a conversation she did not want to have.
“Because I like you.” His answer was as bland and meaningless as his entire approach to the relationship.
“But why? We don’t have anything in common. You and I don’t gel in any way. I want to have fun and smile and laugh…while you simply sit there with no expression.” The frustration built in her voice. “I like you too. But nothing about this works. I keep trying and I feel like you’re not doing anything in return.”
“Maybe I don’t see any need to try harder. I like things the way they are.” The fact that he could say this with a straight face almost floored her.
“Will, what about this is great?”
“We get to spend time together.”
“Sure, but for what? We don’t do anything. I take you to places and you don’t want to participate in anything. You aren’t interested in talking to my friends. You seem more annoyed when you’re around them than anything else.”
Only when Vickie is around. “I can try harder.”
Alexis stopped walking, turned, and rested her arms on the railing as she looked out over the river. She rested her chin on her arms, frustrated into silence. Will stepped forward, leaned over, and put his arm across her shoulders. She closed her eyes and savored the moment because she was reasonably sure it wouldn’t happen again.
