CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The hotel was a nondescript place on the fringes of Lexington that looked as though it pulled in a large horse racing clientele, judging by the photographs and prints of what Paige assumed were famous horses on the walls. Not being a fan of the sport herself, she didn’t know.

The place was very comfortable looking, but also seemed as though it had deliberately gone out of its way to avoid any personality beyond the prints, as if suspecting that clients traveling for business didn’t care about anything except clean, safe rooms that they could be gone from the moment morning came, and not wanting to spend any money on the place beyond that.

There was a small bar area, and to Paige’s surprise, Christopher gestured to it as the two of them approached.

“Do you want to get a drink, Paige?”

It was uncharacteristic behavior from him; Christopher had been keeping his distance for a couple of cases now, apparently guessing the attraction that Paige felt and not wanting to provide any chance for anything to happen. Yet suddenly he wanted to have a drink with her? It was an offer that made Paige feel conflicted, a part of her wanting to keep up the careful distance that she’d maintained since she found out that Christopher had a wife, another part not wanting to make things awkward by turning down her partner.

She could have one drink, she supposed. It wouldn’t make any difference, and in any case, it wasn’t like anything was going to happen. Both she and Christopher were more careful than that. They were partners, and that was enough for both of them. It had to be.

“Sure,” Paige said, heading over to the bar with him. The bartender was a good-looking young man in his twenties who flashed Paige a bright smile as she and Christopher approached, a note of obvious interest there that might have just been professional, or might have been something more. Paige found that she wasn’t interested, though. She didn’t react to every guy out there just because they were good looking. Only Christopher seemed to have that effect on her, and it had more to do with the way he was intelligent and kind, how he’d saved her life, and how he seemed to connect to her whatever the two of them were doing.

He did have that effect on her, though, making it hard to remember that they needed to keep distance between them.

“What will you have?” the bartender asked.

“Whiskey,” Christopher said.

Paige shrugged. “Make that two.”

Christopher raised an eyebrow. “I had you down as more of a white wine kind of woman.”

“And what’s one of those?” Paige asked, although truthfully, she’d only ordered the whiskey on a whim, to keep pace with her partner.

“Oh, you know, doesn’t want to risk anything too strong in case it gets you slightly out of control,” Christopher said. “I got the feeling that being in control of what’s going on is important to you.”

It was, most of the time. Mostly, Paige dreaded what might happen if she wasn’t the person most in control of the situation.
