I don’t remember much about the rest of our journey. Did we walk for a day or days? We must have made it to the river, reboarded a barge to the city of Wuhu. But I don’t remember a boat, and for the rest of their lives, my parents only talked of the endless trek through the mountains when remembering our journey. In my memories we are walking forever and then the chair drops and my mother shrieks. Over and over this scene plays in my head until there is nothing but this moment.

It was evening by the time we arrived at my uncle’s residence, a traditional compound surrounded by a stone wall and barred gate, dark and unfriendly, two iron and wood doors latched to two stone columns, guarded by two grim-faced men carrying guns. My father argued with the men for a while until finally one of them went inside to bring my uncle out.

When my uncle Huan saw us, bedraggled and muddy, he was too surprised to greet us properly. “It must be true,” he said grimly. “The Japanese are going to attack the capital.”
