When Arianette awoke the next morning, Varik was gone, and it took a few moments for her to remember where she was. The hazy wine and passion-soaked memories of the night before were slow to bubble back up to the surface of her bleary mind.

She moaned, her head throbbing and her mouth tasting bitter. She glanced around the room for water but found only the dregs of last night’s Faerie wine in the decanters. Her stomach did a somersault at the smell of it. That was the last thing she wanted.

What she really wanted was to crawl back into Varik’s big soft bed, breathe in his scent, and sleep off this wretched hangover. But her absence had already been noted, as was made abundantly clear by Braedin’s unexpected appearance at Varik’s chamber door the night before. She would have to emerge eventually, face what she’d done, and figure out what to do next.

She scanned the room for her clothes and winced as she spied the tattered remains of her nightdress. It wouldn’t do to go wandering around the castle in that. She glanced about for something else—anything else. A blue crushed velvet robe monogrammed with the letter V draped over a chair in one corner of the room caught her eye. Not optimal, but it would do.

Arianette snatched it up and put it on. It was way too large for her, but it smelled of Varik. She was disconcerted by how comforting she found the scent of his magic. Geis or no geis, she did not want to feel this strange connection to the Skylord welling up inside of her. Loving could be dangerous. Especially loving for someone like Varik Skyborn.

What a fool she had been last night. She wanted to blame the faerie wine, but in her heart, she knew that wasn’t it. She and the Skylord were mates. As distressing as it was, that could be the only explanation.

She trudged along, trying to make sense of her confusion and attempting not to throw up on the sparkling white floors of the Sky Palace. But she only made it halfway down the staircase—which suddenly seemed twice as steep as the previous night—before her stomach churned, and she had to rest.

Arianette sank down on the landing, pressing her forehead against the cool stone and taking deep breaths.

And that was where Lorna discovered her not long after.

“Where have you been?” Lorna kept her voice hushed as if to avoid alerting others, even though every guard on the upper stories of the Sky Tower had seen Arianette pass by on her walk of shame from the Skylord’s quarters.

Before Arianette could muster the will to answer, Lorna’s gaze snagged on the monogrammed robe. She narrowed her eyes, assessing Arianette’s condition.

“Ah. I see,” Lorna murmured.

Taking pity on Arianette, Lorna didn’t chide or lecture her. Instead, she helped her to her feet, offering her a shoulder to lean on as she escorted her back down what felt like a hundred staircases to the lower floor room that housed Lady Violetta’s chambers.
