CHAPTER SEVEN

Eight Years Ago

day of capture

The redhead was back.

She was standing in the corner of the venue, an untouched drink in her hand while her other arm hugged her middle, as if to shield herself from the world. Her eyebrows were scrunched so closely together, they nearly touched. She must have been a freshman. Why else was she standing awkwardly to the side, instead of being surrounded by her friends? These kinds of social events had a closed invitation for students. The only reason Shiloh was allowed in was because her brother was in the student body government.

It was the second night in a row the two girls crossed paths. Shiloh was just working up the courage to walk over there and strike up conversation when the redhead made eye contact. She seemed pleasantly surprised to see her, flashing a relieved smile.

Shiloh took that as an invitation to stop dancing and join her. “Hey.”

“Hi!”

“I saw you yesterday. Do you come here a lot?”

Great opener, Shi, she cringed.

But hey, at least it made the girl laugh. They were far enough from the speakers to hear each other clearly, and the sound of her giggles cut through the music for a moment.

“Not really,” she admitted. “My father’s usually pretty strict about me going out.”

Shiloh nodded in sympathy. “I get that. My dad still asks my brother to come with me whenever I want to go out. Like I need a chaperone or whatever.”

The redhead looked around in confusion. “Where is he?”

“Off making out with someone.”

Right when the redhead turned to her and smiled again, the neon lights dancing around the room lit up her face. Her hair was a natural ginger, but the way the red beam hit her eyes just then, it looked like a slightly deeper shade of the same color.

“I’m Shiloh by the way.”

“Grace. So do you go to school here?”

Shiloh shrugged and leaned against the wall. “Nah, I’m just visiting. My dad and my brother are here. You? Are you a freshman?”

The other girl nodded. “Starting next week.”

Grace was fidgeting from side to side. Clearly, she didn’t come to parties often. Shiloh couldn’t ask her to dance while she was this uncomfortable.

“Do you know what you want to study?” she probed gently.

The redhead bit her lip and answered much too quickly. “No.”

Shiloh raised her eyebrows but didn’t push her luck further. “Well, what do you like to do?”

Grace looked at her curiously, either considering the question or debating whether or not to share the answer.

“Painting. You know, the kind that goes on a big canvas and gets put on display in an art gallery. Also, I like to draw sketches of people.”

Huh. Cute and creative.

“That’s pretty cool,” Shiloh complimented her. “So why don’t you study that?”

Grace sighed, finally giving in. “My father doesn’t approve. He thinks it’s a waste of time.”

“Ah. Classic tale of parents versus art.”

She snorted. “It’s more a case of ‘he wants me to join the family business’ type of thing.”

“Seriously? What does he do?”

All of a sudden, Grace glanced down at her phone with a frown.
