Chapter 13

“Since someone seems to be targeting The Lighthouse Inn and it is now an actual crime scene, Kitty and Janie are closing the inn indefinitely.” Oh, I did not like being right in this instance. Chad had called all of us into the kitchen area. “We aren’t sure why the inn seems to be a target, but we are concerned about the safety of all of you. Even certain busybodies, who are getting threatening text messages.” He gave me a pointed look.

Lizzy poked me in the ribs. “Ouch. Knock it off.” She had such sharp elbows.

George stood on the other side of me. He whispered, “You got a threatening text message?”

Putting my hand in front of my mouth, I told him I’d show him after the impromptu meeting. Lizzy, George, Gloria, and I stood in the front row facing Chad as he spoke. Kitty stood in front, with Chad. She and her sister, Janie, stood a bit off to the side. As Kitty’s silent partner in the business, Janie’s presence was crucial during this meeting. The rest of the kitchen staff rounded out our group. A few people were missing, but Kitty would fill them in later.

“... and we will have a press conference this afternoon at the fire department, to inform the public. But we won’t be mentioning the poison pen letters, so if you could refrain from discussing them with people, that’d be great. Thanks. That is all.” Kitty indicated she wanted to say something, so Chad gave her a little introduction. “And Kitty Lockridge would like to say a few words.”

Kitty went on to tell all of us in attendance how she appreciated our loyalty and dedication, and how she intended to make The Lighthouse Inn fully functional as soon as possible. Then she surprised us all. “For the time you are all off, I will pay everyone your normal wages while we are shut down. It will be a struggle, but I value all of my employees. If you want to pick up any holiday hours at Janie’s clothes shop in Turtle Bay, talk to Janie before you leave. So, please be patient and we hope to reopen soon after the New Year. Oh, and thank you.”

After leaving the stage, Kitty beckoned to me and Lizzy. We followed her into her office. Unsure of why she wasn’t inviting Janie to join us, I figured it must be a staffing issue. Oh but wait, wouldn’t George be present? Stumped, I obediently just followed them.

“Annie, can you please shut the door?” After I shut the door, Kitty dissolved into tears. Stoic, business-savvy Kitty crumpled in front of us. Lizzy and I just looked at each other, unsure of what to do. We were tired and I wasn’t sure I could think anymore. Plus, I felt like I was forgetting something. An appointment. I couldn’t shake the feeling.

Trying to look alert, I stood straight up. “Um, Kitty, are you ok?”

She just shook her head as she shredded tissues.
