We stroll down Main Street together, mostly idle chit-chatting. I ask him how long he's been in Yverwood, to which he says only a couple of days. He knows nothing of Yverwood because of his parents, he says. I have to explain where a few things are. Luckily, Yverwood is a small town, and quite friendly.
I lead us to the Adder's Fork, which offers a lovely selection of seasonal favorites on their brunch menu. We're seated at a booth, and Reeser looks over the menu, while I look at him (I'm quite familiar with the menu, and I always get the daily pancake special).
"Who are your grandparents, if you don't mind me asking?" I ask. "As tight knit as Yverwood is, I should expect I know them."
"The Whitleys. Earlth and Darma," he says, peaking over the menu. His lips turn downward. "They're not living anymore."
"Ah, the Whitleys?" My eyebrows perk. "My mother was close with Mrs. Whitley. I'm sorry," I say, reaching my hand out and placing it over top of one of his. It's warmer than it was last night. Still thin, yet soft.
"Oh, it's all right. I would have liked to know them, though. You knew them?"
"Yes." I smile fondly. "They were so dedicated to each other that they vowed to leave this plane together. It was peaceful, when they went. I promise."
He smiles back wanly. "Thank you. I'm glad."
"What about your parents?"
His frown deepens, and I wish to reach out to smooth the crease forming on his forehead. "Things with them are...strained. I didn't tell them I came back here, to be honest."
"They didn't want you to be a witch or warlock, did they?
"No. They wanted a normal life, for both them and me. I always hated that they made that choice for me, before I could decide for myself. I would have wanted to become a witch."
Lila, one of the usual on staff, comes by to take our order. I get the house pancakes, and Reeser does as well.
She fills both our mugs before walking back behind the counter to turn in our orders.
"It's a shame," Reeser says after she's gone.
"What's that?" I raise a brow, curious what he's on about now.
"It's not possible now, for me to be a witch."
His face is sullen. Not so sunken (literally) anymore, only figuratively. "Do you have magical ability?" I presume he may, if he cast the curse on himself.
"I do, but...Wouldn't I be a warlock? Witches are women, aren't they? And, I, wellâI'm a man, but I'm trans. Does that make a difference?"
I can't help laughing a little. Such a silly notion, that magical practices are gendered. "That's all balderdash that workadays who know nothing of magic think. Whether you're a witch or warlock has nothing to do with gender, only what types of magic you practice. Witches specialize in charms and potions, and warlocks, like myself, exorcize demons and break curses. Both can perform some minor spells. You can be whichever you please."
"Oh..." Reeser puts his hands on his mug, looking down into his black coffee, pale cheeks tinged pink.
