Of course she was too amped up to go to sleep. Even after running through the nightâs events once more with Posey, Marie knew it would all weigh too heavily on her. When she finally found her way to bed at 1:15, she had no delusions that she would be able to go to sleep. She was too worried about Boo, and she was anxiously awaiting further word from Brendon. And, of course, the sight of Kentâs body was a little too much to look beyond.
She could actually feel Booâs absence in the room. It led to questions of what had happened to him and if sheâd endangered him in some way. With these thoughts clinging to the front of her mind, she reached for Juneâs journals, hidden away in the drawer of her nightstand.
She was saddened to find that she had almost reached the end of them; she was about a quarter of the way through the second one already. However, even as she read through the pages, she could not help but wonder what other secrets might be hidden away in this house. It seemed to offer up something every time she started to get truly disenchanted or feel lost.
She read several entries, all of them seeming to echo back to earlier ones sheâd read; disembodied voices, ghostly figures there one minute and gone the next, a sense of being followed or watched through the hallwaysâbut not scared of any of it. As she read, she thankfully felt sleep closing in, her eyes growing heavy and her mind wearing down.
But then she saw one particular entry, located at the bottom of a page about halfway through the notebook. She read it and then read it again, sitting up with a little gasp. She literally rubbed at her eyes to make sure sheâd read the passage correctly.
