6. At Crystal Manor Apartments - Marybeth's Apartment
Jim Bramsby headed out to his car, promising to come back after lunch.
"Why is he coming back after lunch?" demanded Matt. "Is he flirting with you?"
"I hardly think so," said Sally.
"I don't like him," said Marybeth. "He's trying to get my poor baby Trevor into trouble."
"Tell me, Marybeth," said Sally. "Didn't you tell me that you left Kentucky when you were in your early twenties?"
"Yes," said Marybeth. "I left to go to Hollywood."
"Didn't you leave Kentucky before Quinn was born?" Sally stared intently at the ghost, which started to shimmer.
"Well, in a manner of speaking, one might say that."
"How about in the manner that most normal people speak?" demanded Matt.
"Okay, yes, I left before any of them were born. So what?"
Sally scratched her cheek. "I guess I'm having a problem understanding how you can have a favorite if you never met them. Have you ever gone back to Kentucky after they were born? Did they ever come out to visit you in California?"
"Trevor did," said Marybeth.
"Ah, that's good. How old was he when he visited?"
"Whatever age he was a few weeks ago," said Marybeth.
"So what you're saying is that Trevor is your favorite because he's the first one who ever contacted you." Sally tried not to laugh.
Marybeth stopped shimmering. "Is there a better reason to have a favorite? Other than because someone cares enough about you to come and see you?"
Matt was strangely sympathetic. "No, Marybeth, there isn't a better reason."
Sally was disturbed. She wanted to talk to Matt, but not with Marybeth present. She wished she could somehow separate Matt and Marybeth, but she didn't know how to send a ghost away. She wanted to discuss her fear with Matt that Trevor had killed Marybeth. How would Marybeth take that news, that her "favorite" nephew had killed her?
Sally reached the top of the stairs. She turned to head towards her apartment, then stopped. She could see the edge of the door to Marybeth's apartment from this side of the hall. It looked...open.
Sally hurried down the hall until she reached the entrance to Marybeth's apartment. Yes, the door was ajar. Was someone inside? Was it possible that Dalip Singh had entered the apartment to check it out? Surely he wouldn't do that, not as long as Sally was paying the rent. Then she remembered she hadn't paid it yet. Marybeth's payment for September was still current.
Cautiously she pushed the door open and peered inside. From here, she could only see the entrance hall and the end of the living room. As usual, the curtains were drawn, and the room was quite dark.
"Why is my apartment open?" asked Marybeth, floating up behind Sally.
Sally whispered quietly, "I don't know. I saw the door opened. Go on in and look around."
"Are you kidding?" said Marybeth. "Someone might be in there."
"What can they do to you, Marybeth? You're already dead. No one can harm a ghost."
"When did you become an expert on ghosts?" asked Marybeth.
"You didn't even believe in ghosts when you were alive," countered Sally.
