“This is not an easy get-together to crash.” A man’s voice rang through the entrance of Ezra’s suite. In walked two people, both incredibly tall. The first one I saw was in a light gray suit, a dress shirt, and a blue tie. He had neat, bright blonde hair and shining blue eyes.

He grinned at me and held out his hand. “You must be Sophie. I’m Graham, it’s a pleasure.”

I took his hand in mine for a shake and immediately felt a rush of energy enter me. I yanked my arm away, and Graham grinned mischievously at me.

“What the hell?” I stood and backed away from him, thrown off by the odd tingling feeling that was left on where he’d touched.

“I can tell that you’re new to the magic realm, considering you just willingly shook hands with a Shadow Keeper.” Graham laughed.

He was not what I imagined a Shadow Keeper to look like in the slightest. If anything, he looked like an actor for a toothpaste commercial: clean-cut, light eyes, tan complexion, kind expression. The name “Shadow Keeper” really made these guys sound like terrifying demons.

The man that followed Graham was slightly shorter with bouncing light brown curls, the same type of sun-touched skin, and glowing green eyes. He also smiled at me as he came and stood next to his friend.

“I’m Kian. I’d try to do the whole shaking your hand prank, but it looks like Graham already has that covered.”

“She literally grabbed it right away! No hesitation.” Graham laughed with his partner. Kian grinned and chuckled, shaking his head.

“Learn any juicy secrets?” Kian’s eyebrows danced playfully, and Graham jokingly placed his fingers on his chin as if to ponder this idea.

“Nothing too concrete. If she’d held my hand a little longer, I’m sure I would have gotten something good.”

“Alright, fellas. Let’s leave poor Sophie alone for a moment.” Ezra came walking in with two glasses of the same dark liquor he was drinking the night prior. Each of the Shadow Keepers took theirs and thanked him, sitting down on the couch.

“I hear there’s been quite the commotion at the Symposium this year.” Graham’s tone had been the same since the first sentence he spoke. It almost sounded like he was doing a comedy bit, like at the end of what he was saying would be some hilarious punchline.

“Yeah, just a few deaths here and there.” Kian elbowed Graham playfully. I looked over at Ezra with a look of disgust on my face.

“Did I just walk into a frat house from an early 2000’s romcom?”

Ezra erupted in laughter and came to sit next to me, patting me reassuringly on the back. “As a matter of fact, yes.”

The next hour or so was spent covering every detail of the symposium so far. The first murder, the Elder’s odd behavior, the second body, and Kory’s spell. The two Shadow Keepers seemed relatively engaged, though there was the occasional snide comment.

When we were finished with our diatribe, Graham sat back and crossed his arms.
