Chapter 30

I’d only been awake about a half hour when Tristan knocked on my door.

“Do you ever sleep?” I asked, squinting at him in the morning light as I stifled a yawn.

He grinned and walked past me into the cabin.

“Rarely. Get dressed. I want you to see something.”

“Good morning, Tristan.”

“Good morning! Now get dressed. I have to work this afternoon, so our time’s limited.

I looked at the clock. “Where on earth are we going that we wouldn’t be back before afternoon?”

“You’ll see. Let’s go. Have you eaten anything?”

“Um, no. I just woke up. I’ve barely finished my cup of coffee.”

“I want to take you to lunch while we’re out, but it’s gonna be a while, so you might want to grab something.”

I yawned again and pondered how anyone could have so much energy in the morning.

I’d taken a shower before bed, so I took down the messy knot of hair on top of my head and braided it loosely down my back, threw on a pair of shorts and a tank top, and with a banana and a granola bar in hand, I was ready to go in record time.

It was a gorgeous day for a road trip, and I couldn’t help comparing the real life experience to the soft focus montage I’d played in my head before.

Tristan was in a great mood, laughing and talkative, asking me questions about my past travels and offering up stories about his.

Most of his adventures had been army-related, and I learned he had entered the service when the war with Iraq broke out in 2003 as part of the military police, but quickly moved into extensive training as a special agent in the US Army’s Criminal Investigation Command.

“My grandfather, Hank, had been CID before he left the army, so it was a big deal to me to follow in his footsteps.” The pride he felt for Hank was evident in his voice and the exalted way he spoke of him.

“Is that the man in the pictures at your house? With the hat?”

He grinned and nodded. “One and the same. And one of a kind. They broke the mold when they made Hank Porter.”

“You were close, huh?”

“Oh, yeah. From the time I could walk, I was his shadow. My brothers and I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, what with Mom and Dad both working long hours and all. But me and Hank had something. I don’t know. We got each other, ya know? On a level I don’t think he ever had with Jay or Holden.”

“Is he the reason you became a deputy?”

He looked at me with shock that it would even be a question. “Without a doubt! There was never anything else I wanted to be. He bought me a hat like his when I was five, and as far as I was concerned, I had already been deputized.”

“Were you a deputy under him as sheriff?”

His smile faded and his eyes turned wistful. “Never had the honor. I was going to.
