“Easy, girl, easy,” Kiya crooned to her, calming poor frightened Thums-Up at least a little bit. “They’re going to let you go, right now!”

“I don’t think you’re in a position to be making any demands!” Nakoo sneered. “When you’re the ones who are in league with these marauding bhoot!”

Somewhere to the left of them, a group of shakchunni and petni were chasing some terrified turbaned men of the court with cackling glee, stretching out their arms to tickle the running men in their armpits. To the right of them, a begho bhoot growled, getting down on all fours to chase a fancily dressed lord and lady up a tree.

“We’re not in league with anyone!” Kiya’s face was absolutely on fire with fury, and for a second Kinjal felt the ground under his feet shake a little before Kiya got her emotions under control again. “You’re the one who’s chopping down all the forests and making the bhoot lose their homes!”

“Why would I do that?” Nakoo seemed perplexed. “Do you think I want these nasty bhoot everywhere?”

“To make more of your factories!” Kinjal spluttered. Wait, was their theory about Nakoo chopping down the forests wrong?

“Hmm.” Minister Nakoo seemed to consider this for a moment, stroking his thin moustache. “Building more factories isn’t a half-bad idea. But to be honest, this side effect is just not worth it!” He pointed angrily to the marauding bhoot.

Kinjal had to admit the guy had a point. So he decided to focus again on the problem at hand. “Well, regardless, you should be thanking Thums-Up for saving the Raja from that turret! Let her go, you slimy toads!”

“Wait a minute! I know you two!” The slimy Minister Nakoo peered over his little half-glasses at Kiya’s and Kinjal’s faces. His nose was long, his hair was oily, his teeth were yellowed and cracked. He was a scary sight, even scarier now that he was realizing who they were. But Kinjal didn’t care, and he knew his sister didn’t either. All they cared about was getting Thums-Up free.

“These are the Raja’s royal niece and nephew!” bellowed Raat. “You should be bowing down to them!”

“I knew it! The little impostors trying to steal the throne!” Nakoo pointed a skinny, long-nailed finger. “You’re criminals! Wanted for high treason! Guards, get them! They’re wanted dead or alive!”
