Although Annabelle is now talking to Johnnie again and their courtship seems to be back on track, her ‘punishment’ is not over yet. In Part 4, she suffers countless indignities. Johnnie stuffs her into a sack, which he then carries to, and deposits in, a boxcar shortly before Union soldiers throw various heavy items on top of her. After his recapture of the General, he looks for her in the boxcar and carelessly tramples all over the sack she is in. When trying to refill the water tank, Annabelle is twice hit by a powerful stream of water. In Part 5, helping Johnnie in his dealings with the Confederate general, she is almost run over by the cavalry and the horse-drawn carts setting off for the Rock River bridge. She only reaches safety when she rejoins her father, leaving Johnnie behind, and being left behind by him in turn, because he runs off to join the battle, thus responding to her earlier demand that he should enlist and fight. In Part 6, except for a brief early scene in which he finds the Union commander in the General’s cab, Johnnie continues to be separated from his engine and his girl, but after she and her father have seen him being enlisted, the couple gets together for the concluding moments of the film, which find them sitting on his engine and kissing. Johnnie is finally reunited with his two loves, and all seems well. But is it?
