Chapter 14

After the mental conversation with Raphael, I ate some fruits I found in the kitchen, in the basket on the table, then went upstairs and found, in the drawer of my nightstand, Dara’s charms. She and Marc were watching a movie in the living room, so I didn’t want to disturb their evening together. I also tried calling Amelia to possibly book a tarot reading, but her phone was switched off. Curse the fates! Maybe I wasn’t meant to receive another message from her cards.

I teleported to the Magic Council’s headquarters. The cold wind in San Francisco blew across my face, chilling my bones. I strode to the tall, glass building. Inside, I greeted the fox shifter who served at the reception. My eyes took in the space, looking for Raphael. I found him sitting in the lounge, away from the reception, nestled against the corner. He was reading something on his phone, deep in concentration.

“Hi, what’s up?” I greeted him, sliding next to him on the nearby sofa.

“Ah, how are you?” A warm smile warmed his face and he arched toward me, his lips brushing mine. He planted a kiss on my lips and said, “I was reading Uriel’s message. Since I’m engaged with thwarting Hades’ and Drogo’s evil masterplans, the other archangels are dealing with the usual stuff.”

“And that is…?” I asked expectantly.

“Regular stuff: fighting demons, assisting humans, delivering evil from this realm. Nothing as serious as dealing with dark Nephilim.” He winked at me.

“Will Michael, by chance, be present at the meeting?” I asked eagerly. I hadn’t seen him in a long time, but I was already missing him. I was hoping the council might have called him in on the present meeting.

“I think not. Durga has given him a different task.”

I was about to ask more about Michael’s duties, but in that moment Raphael’s phone beeped and he glanced at the display.

“It’s Neil. He’s calling us upstairs,” he said and jumped from the sofa, striding to the elevator. I followed him, trying to keep up with his fast pace.

Raphael turned to me. “Before we enter the room, I want to fill you in on the latest news. Drogo confessed to Lucius after an intense interrogation. He claimed Hades and his minions were going to perform a rare and extremely powerful dark ritual in the Gates of Hades.”

“The Gates of Hades?” I asked, squinting my eyes suspiciously. I wrinkled my forehead as I racked my brains: this was the first time I was hearing of this place. Surely, everybody knew about the Gates of Hell, but the Gates of Hades? Was it not the same place? I doubted this was common knowledge even in our community.

The elevator beeped open, and we went inside. As the elevator started, lifting us across the floors, Raphael replied to my question, “It’s a mythical place in the Underworld, in Hades’ realm. Of course, it’s not located in the physical realm, but in the astral one. A special spell is required to enter this place.
