Chapter 24

Jenessa stood in the reception area of the Hidden Valley police station, confused by what the receptionist had just said. Perfect timing?

Just then, Michael and George stepped out from the back of the station. “That was quick,” Provenza said to Michael.

Why was everyone acting as though she had been expected here?

“Come on back,” Provenza said, gesturing to the door that led to the interrogation rooms, giving away nothing in his expression or tone.

Okay. This was too easy. Either something was up or, for some strange reason, these two wanted to give her the story on the investigation. Jenessa hoped the latter was true, but feared the former was a more likely scenario.

With an uneasy feeling bubbling in her gut, she followed the two detectives to the interrogation room. Normally, if she were lucky that is, she would find herself on the other side of the two-way mirrors, watching Provenza and Michael question a perp, but today she didn’t feel so fortunate.

No. It felt a whole lot more like she was the one about to be questioned. Again.

Michael went in first, then George ushered her through the door, and brought up the rear, closing the door behind them. “Take a seat.” George gestured toward the perp side of the table.

“What’s going on here?” she asked.

“Just have a seat.” Michael pulled out the chair for her. A memory popped into her head, an image of him doing this for her at Antonio’s Italian Ristorante when they were first dating—but this felt far removed from that.

She almost felt like a criminal. Were they going to question her again in Rafe’s death?

“Nothing to worry about, Miss Jones,” Provenza said. “We just have a few more questions for you.”

“Okay,” she said with a bit of trepidation as she sat. The metal chair was cold. She scooched it closer to the table, as if that would make her feel more comfortable. Right now, though, nothing seemed like it could do that.

George took the chair across from her and opened a file folder, but Michael chose to remain standing. He spread his legs, taking a wide stance, crossing his arms over his muscular chest, sending the message that they meant business.

“So, tell us again,” Provenza said, “how exactly did you know Rafe Santiago?”

An hour or more had passed, Jenessa was exhausted.

“You do have the most to gain by his death,” George had said.

It seemed like she had reiterated a thousand times what little she knew about Rafe, and it was beginning to feel as though they saw her as a feasible suspect in this investigation. Had she done enough to persuade them of her innocence?

Even if George could be convinced, could Michael? Surely he couldn’t actually think she had anything to do with Rafe’s murder.

“Listen, now that we’re done—we are done here, right?” She glanced between the men for their agreement.

Michael shrugged and looked to his partner. Provenza nodded.

A small sigh of relief slipped through her lips. “Okay, now that we’re done, can I ask you a few questions?”

Dual nods in her direction were a good start.
