Chapter Twenty

It was quiet on the outskirts of Enna. The city sat perched on a hill, lit up against the dark, with rows of homes and churches and an old crumbling castle that attracted tourists during the busy season. Then the land turned rough, craggy, dipping with hills and valleys and sheer rock faces.

Everything was swallowed up by the darkness, shrouded by the dense growth of bushes and trees. It was wild here, and Dom’s eyes flicked to the clock on the dash. 9:56.

The raids on the two unassuming houses deep in Varda territory were well underway, bolstered by the extra men Matteo had sent down the day before. Dom wouldn’t hear the outcome of those until after. Rossi was supposed to make contact as soon as the situation was under control.

If the statement with the first raid was one of being caught by surprise and having to haul ass, then this one was intended to look more like retaliation. He wanted Varda to know who hit him and how. Whatever Varda was hiding in those houses would belong to the Bianchis before the night was over.

9:58. He scanned for headlights, but the road remained dark. If they were meeting in Enna, as Sforza said, this was the only way in and out coming from either the Gallo or Antonetti territories. He couldn’t imagine they’d want to loop around to the far side of the city and risk being in Bianchi-controlled Romano territory any longer than necessary.

Emilia said Varda bought the story that Dom was retaliating for his lost men by hitting some random Varda properties. He’d nearly shared more than he should have when they went to the movies. She was far too easy to talk to. But keeping her safe was a priority. And leaving her in the dark was the best way to do that.

The sweep of headlights caught his eye, and he straightened in his seat, the men with him shifting to get a better look through the windshield. An SUV followed by a large panel van turned left on a dirt road ahead of them, and Dom instructed his man to keep the lights off but creep up behind them.

He didn’t want to be seen here. The point was to remain invisible. Watch and gather information. All he wanted to know was who was bankrolling Varda’s impressive gun collection.

The road was narrow and pocked with holes, and he had to admire their commitment to staying out of sight. Taillights flashed up ahead and stopped, and they pulled onto the shoulder, angling the dark SUV into the shadows of the trees to keep it hidden from view.

He rolled the window down, but the incessant chirping of bugs drowned out whatever conversation was being had as the double doors opened on the back of the truck. The flame from a lighter flared and went dark again, leaving only the glowing embers from a cigarette. He had to get closer and see.

“Stay here,” he said, reaching for the door.
