Colwyn’s phone dinged, notifying him of an incoming text. He pulled his phone from his desk and smiled when he saw the message was from Heidi. His smile faded somewhat when he read the message and saw that it was followed by a hefty amount of backup.

‘what exactly does there’s something I need to talk to you about mean?’

‘why aren’t you answering me?’

‘oh shit are you still in a meeting?’

‘I’m sorry for nagging’

‘I swear I’m not a crazy girlfriend’

‘hello?’

Colwyn’s anxiousness rose with each new message until he finally decided to stop reading and just hit the icon to call her.

“What’s wrong?” Heidi gasped by way of greeting.

“Why do you think something’s wrong?” he asked nervously.

“Because you said, and I quote, ‘there’s something I need to talk to you about’. That’s what you say when you’re breaking up with someone.”

“Isn’t it also what you say when you want to talk about something specific with someone you definitely don’t wish to break up with?”

“Oh. I mean…I guess so,” she admitted slowly. She then laughed nervously and enthused, “What’s up?”

“I…um…got a lead on a job opportunity for you.”

“You…what? No way! Tell me everything.”

“I was in a client meeting this morning for a company which has built an add-on to their base offering and is looking to expand that product to include predictive analytics. They were complaining about their ability to justify the cost of our services considering the poor engagement they’ve gotten thus far for the product. I asked them about their marketing strategy, and everyone got quiet. They said they’ve been struggling to staff up that department in the wake of recent turnover. It’s a small start-up with about forty employees, but they’re local and, in spite of the challenges they’re having with this product, their overall business plan is sound. I hope you don’t mind, but I stopped by the CFO’s office and dropped off your resume.”

He heard what sounded suspiciously like a sob come from the phone. He quickly added, “I apologize if I overstepped. It sounded like it could be right up your alley.”

“Are. You. Insane?”

All Colwyn managed to get out was, “Well…” before the other end of the conversation exploded in giddy laughter.

As the laughter faded, Heidi gushed, “Thank you. Thank you very much. That was incredibly thoughtful.”

“Why were you laughing?”

“Because I’m insane. Completely fucking coocoo bananas. Certainly not because you did something incredibly thoughtful for me, and I thought you were instead breaking up with me because I’m not right in the head.”

“Why would I ever break up with you?’

She said, “The more you ask these completely reasonable sounding questions, the more insane I sound.”

“I don’t think you sound insane. I think you sound wonderful.”

“You know…it’s pretty hot when you dismiss my crazy. Although I can’t imagine you feel the same, considering that we agreed to start dating and then I immediately went out of town. Not exactly acceptable girlfriend behavior. I’m sorry I couldn’t call last night. My dad needed me to run a ton of errands for him.
