CHAPTER TWELVE
Amara woke to the feeling of being surrounded in a smoky, woody comforting scent reminding her of Zikâs seductive and intoxicating spicy cardamon and rosewood cologne. It took her a few minutes to fully come awake and realise she lay on a deep velvet sofa in a living room with lilac walls, covered in a blanket against soft cushions rather than in bed beside Zik on their wedding night.
Light from the partly opened drapes indicated it was day, and the dark-wood door with an intricate design was closed. Sangria-hued throw cushions sat in cream-coloured 1950s style upholstered armchairs. The rug was a custom-made geo design matching the wall and provided a canvas for the rest of the furniture. Two recesses in the wall had built-in dark-wood shelves stacked with art pieces and books. With the green potted plants and vases with flowers, the soft textures and the vibrant colours, the space looked very romantic and stylish.
Not exactly the kind of layout she would have imagined a man to live in, let alone a prince. It showed an artistic, sensitive persona. Another pleasant surprise.
This was Zikâs country home. Now her home, too.
Yesterday had been their marriage ceremony. The joy of celebrating with her family and friends seemed a long time ago because of her argument with Zik in the car last night. She hadnât expected him to give her an ultimatum or to even leave her alone on their wedding night.
But heâd left her right here in this living room while heâd gone to bed claiming he was tired. Sheâd gone through the effort of freshening up and dressing in sexy lingerie, all for nothing.
Sheâd thought heâd been bluffing, that he would come out later and apologise.
He hadnât.
Sheâd ended up watching TV because she couldnât sleep, and she must have fallen asleep on the sofa anyway.
So whoâd covered her with the blanket? It had to be Zik. Heâd come into this living room and found her on the sofa with skimpy clothing, and all he did was cover her up?
This was serious. Was he not attracted to her?
Her chest tightened as her body grew heavy. Zik the playboy didnât find her desirable? A ridiculous concept and yet hurtful to imagine.
She shoved the horrid feeling aside. She wouldnât give in to despair already, just one day into their married life. Getting off the sofa, she padded across the quiet hallway into her bedroom. A trip to the bathroom afterwards and she completed her morning routine.
For her outfit, she chose a midi-length flared bronze dress with a pair of black roman sandals. Zik has said they would do a tour of the castle, and she needed to be comfortable and look informal.
Dressed, she walked through the corridors checking the other rooms. A den, a library, an office, a master bedroom and bathroom. All the doors were accessible except one. She wondered why that specific door was locked when Zikâs bedroom was open.
In the kitchen, she found a bowl of fruits sitting on the granite counter and grabbed an apple.
