Javi glanced at them. “Oh, if we have an emergency and need to open the doors fast those are so they don’t drift away.” He grinned. “Honestly, if we have an emergency that big I don’t think it’d matter if we had them or not. Anyhow, it wasn’t the doors you wanted to look at, right?”

“No, I…” She stopped as the Arco arced neatly out from the docking bay and swept past a gray-toned pod to take station some two hundred meters away. “…wow.”

The Explorer Beta was an impressive sight. The docking bay was the narrowest part of the hub, positioned ahead of the huge round bulge of the engines and four 200-meter-tall stalks that held elevator access to each of the main pods. Those were each shaped almost like a boat hull—curved on what, from the inside, would be the “bottom” of the pod, flat on the top. At the front and back of each pod, a tube curved to the next. From the front, the Beta would have a circular profile.
