In Evening Light I used various tonal values in the clouds on the right and left lighter areas surrounding the large tree, to emphasize its structure. I painted cloud shadows in the foreground to provide contrast with the soft light in the sky.
Moonlight provides a good example of light in the landscape. The soft light radiates over the distant mountains and highlights the farmstead and the track, leading the viewerâs eye into the painting. Masking fluid was initially applied to preserve the white of the paper representing the track. Washes and detail were applied after the masking fluid was removed.
