Stage 1

First, make a careful drawing of the group of leaves, going into some detail. If you have a good drawing to start with you’ll be able to paint the final result with more accuracy; leaves very often change angle and either droop or perk up at different times of the day, and if you’re painting directly from life over a period of hours you may find these subtle differences confusing.

Stage 2

Prepare the canvas or board with a coloured ground – I have used Burnt Sienna – then transfer the drawing on to it by marking out a line drawing in paint. There’s no need to draw every detail this time – just the outline of the leaves and the position of the stems.
