Chapter 33

Tuesday, November 29, 1855 Hours

After Perry and Gallegos drove off, MacFarland tried to call Haskell. She answered faster than he expected.

“Don’t you have a cell phone?” he asked.

“Well, hello to you too, Mac. Yes, I have a cell phone.”

“Why don’t you give me your cell phone number? It might be easier than leaving messages with the hotel.”

Haskell hesitated before replying. “When I’m out on the road, I prefer to have personal calls go through the hotel.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. It’s just something I’ve always done.”

“Well, our calls are not just personal. They’re sort of business. After all, you are helping me with the case.”

“Your calls are not personal? Oh.”

“No, all calls are not personal. My calls aren’t like your calls to my brother.”

“My calls to your brother!” Haskell laughed. “They are hardly personal. We’re just friends, after all.”

“Just friends? Seem to be rather intimate friends to me.”

“Mac, he sleeps on the couch. We haven’t even had sex yet.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“I’m sorry you don’t believe me. You can ask Robert.”

“I believe Robert even less than you.”

“I don’t know what to do with you, Mac.”

“Well?”

“Well what?”

“Are you going to give me your cell number?”

“Alright already! Got a pencil?”

“I’ve got a good memory.”

She gave him the number. He hung up, then dialed the cell number. She answered almost immediately. “Okay, you can remember ten numbers for thirty seconds. Impressive. Now, what did you want?”

MacFarland hesitated. Her comment about his calls not being personal started him thinking that perhaps she did want a more personal relationship with him. Laura had made it quite clear that she was done with him, probably because she thought he was still seeing Denni. If that was the case, he might as well make it true. Besides, if she started seeing him again, maybe she would dump Robert. That thought brought a smile to his lips.

“I was going to ask you out to dinner tonight.”

“Really?” Haskell seemed surprised, and to his ear, a bit pleased. “Tonight? What time?”

“How about I pick you up at seven-thirty?”

“That sounds good, Mac. I look forward to it. Want me to pick out a restaurant?”

“No, I’ll handle the reservations this time. I’ll be by at seven-thirty.”

He ended the call, smiling broadly.

Rufus stared at him. “You seem in a good mood, boss.”

“I am, Rufus. I am!” He did a quick little jig next to his cart. “I’ve got a date with Denni tonight.”

Rufus nodded, about to say something, then thinking better of it. Finally he said, “Didn’t Mr. Perry say they just met with her?”

“Yep.”

“You don’t find that strange, boss?”

“Oh, I do, Rufus. It’s one of the things I intend to ask Denni about tonight. I was under the impression that she couldn’t stand Gallegos. Or he couldn’t stand her. Now I find out that she knows him and helped him get a job with the Broncos. Nothing about this woman rings true. Yeah, I’ve got a lot of things to talk to her about tonight.”

MacFarland made reservations at the Wellshire Inn on Colorado Boulevard.
