Sergeant Ballantine: Did you make any communication to anyone?

Bogle: Yes, when he agreed to take me to England. I said, had I not better write and say I was coming? He said, ‘Yes, perhaps you had better write to my aunt Lady Doughty.’ And then I got my son to write, and I signed the letter.

SB: How came you to go to England?

B: Well, it was partly my own doing. When he said he was going to England, I said, ‘There will be plenty of people glad to see you, and I wish I was going too.’ He said, ‘I’ll take you if you like.’ I thanked him, and said I would go. I then got rid of my little furniture, and gave up my little room, and then he said he could not take me, as he wanted money. I was very much annoyed; and when he saw that I was annoyed he said he would see me the next morning. I did see him the next morning, and then he said he had made arrangements, and I was to go with him.

SB: Did you keep a copy of your letter to Lady Doughty?

B: No, no copy at all.

SB: And when you returned you informed Lady Doughty of your return?

B: Yes, I called, but she refused to see me, and the 50 pound annuity has never since been paid.
