R & R in Magadan

On arriving in Sakhalin, they found no dog cages had been scheduled in the near future. Michail suggested some R&R at his home in Magadan. Also, there was the possibility of more HAM radio contact with Anna.

For Ryan, the most interesting hours in drab, dreary old Magadan were always the ones spent at the business center over much vodka, caviar, and dinners of beefsteak with garlic potatoes or fresh salmon with rice.

The obligatory billiard games with Michail’s Magadan buddy Alexander and his rapidly failing old boss were pleasant enough, but most interesting were the conversations with other Americans who were in Magadan to be wined and dined by Siberians hoping to attract investors for gold or diamond mining schemes, fishing and cannery investments, wild boar hunts, or sport-fishing trips. What the poor Siberians always seemed to learn the hard way was that by and large these American entrepreneurs had no more money than they did.

Occasionally, the Russians found a live one, usually blowing the deal by being so short-sighted they robbed the mark of his cash before any meaningful joint-venture could be consummated.

Ryan found himself dragged into another billiards game. While attempting to keep from losing the game too obviously, he began to let his mind drift back to the not too distant past in Siberia. He could not keep his thoughts from dwelling on how the world, his world, had been:
