Claire and Nicole had an early dinner at a restaurant on Main Street and when they finished, Claire felt much better.

“I feel strong again. My mind is clear. The food really helped me get my strength back. I’m glad we stayed in town to eat before heading back to Boston.”

“Every once in a while, I have a good idea.” Nicole smiled. “Anything you want to do before we catch the train home?”

“No, I think I’m done for the day. Even though I feel much better, I’m still really tired. These events wear me out. Are you okay with heading back?”

“Fine by me. We’ve had a full day.”

The friends paid for the meal and left the restaurant. The sidewalks were crowded with people heading out for dinner, shopping, drinks, or just a pleasant stroll around the town to window shop.

“I get the heebie-jeebies whenever we get near Sofia’s shop,” Nicole said. “Oh, look. I didn’t realize someone had taken her sign down already.”

“I think it was there when we met Detective Brooklyn earlier.” Claire looked in through the windows to see if anyone was inside, and she saw a man carrying a chair in the waiting room. “Someone’s in there. Must be the landlord.”

“Or maybe somebody rented the place already,” Nicole suggested. “But it’s not supposed to be rented for at least another week according to the police.”

“Well, someone’s inside. The landlord could have hired a cleaning service.”

“Want to stop for a few minutes, or go right home? We could see if the woman who owns the clothing store next door to Sofia’s shop is in. They were supposed to be very friendly with one another,” Nicole said.

“I’m okay with making the stop.”

“And look,” Nicole smiled. “Such nice things in the window display. You talk to the owner while I shop,” she kidded.

When they stepped inside, Claire asked a salesclerk, “Is the owner in? We’d like to speak with her, if possible.”

“Sure, I’ll get her.”

A minute later, the salesclerk walked out of the backroom with a woman, and then she gestured to Claire and Nicole.

“Hello. I’m Lee Binder. Can I help you with something?” The fit-looking woman had shoulder-length auburn hair and seemed to be in her early thirties. She was dressed in an emerald green blouse and tan slacks and wore a green and blue chunky necklace and green drop earrings. She looked stylish and professional. “Oh, weren’t you with that detective a couple of hours ago? Didn’t you go into the shop next door with the officer?”

The young women explained their interest in speaking with the store owner by telling her they sometimes did research for some police departments, and when they said Sofia’s name, Lee’s facial muscles tightened.

“Come with me to my office in back where we can talk privately.” Lee ushered the women into a small, but stylishly-decorated room with a big window, a glass desk, and four comfortable arm chairs set around a coffee table.

“Please, have a seat.” Lee sank into one of the plush chairs. “I just can’t believe what happened to Sofia.
