Chapter 5

When I woke up, Lio was still lying behind me, but we were no longer alone. I woke up to the sound of the front door slamming violently shut.

“So this is how you choose to spend your time instead of training?” Angelo bellowed.

I immediately jumped up, and so did Lio.

“Hey, do not speak to her like that!” Lio snapped. “You have no right!”

“I have no right?” Angelo scoffed. “Where do you have the right? This is my training time, Lio! And instead of telling her to go spend it with me, you’re in here coddling her!”

“I’m not going to tell her to do anything! I am not her ruler, and neither are you. If anything, she is our ruler. We don’t tell her what to do, she tells us! And you are being far too harsh. She is doing her best. She needs time to adjust.” Lio stomped down the stairs.

“We do not have time for her to adjust!” Angelo argued.

Goddammit. I was finally starting to feel relaxed, and now I had Lio and Angelo fighting about me. This was not helping my stress level at all. In fact, I began to feel myself tremble with anxiety right then and there.

“We have to make time! We can’t force her to do what she’s not capable of!”

“She’s capable, Lio! She’s the chosen one! Nobody besides her is capable!”

“Please, stop,” I called out. “Please stop fighting about me.”

Lio turned to me empathetically. “Annabelle, I’m sorry. We will go outside—”

Angelo cut him off. “No, we won’t! If she is our ruler, stop treating her like a child. She is fierce! She doesn’t need to be babied. She needs to be pushed!”

I was shaking even worse now, and that was when I realized… I’d forgotten to take my meds today.

I rushed downstairs and grabbed my bottle of pills off the counter. I was about to open it up when Angelo gasped.

“That’s… that’s it,” he said with a finality in his voice. “That is the issue.”

“What’s the issue?” Lio asked, confused.

Angelo stepped toward me and grabbed the bottle out of my hand in one quick motion.

“It’s these! It’s these damn pills! They are dulling her emotions and her ability to get in touch with her powers.”

I glanced over to Lio, and I could see instantly that he agreed. He also thought my pills were the cause.

But I refused to accept that…

Because I couldn’t live my life without them.

“Oh, please! It’s not the pills! The pills help me!”

“The pills numb you!” Angelo argued. “They make you unable to cope with your emotions. No witch can use their powers while being out of touch with their emotions! It takes emotional strength to use those powers. You need to be aware of yourself.”

I could feel my shaking begin to get even worse. “Just give them to me, Angelo. You’re wrong. They help me.”

Lio began to speak to me slowly. “Perhaps he’s right, Annabelle. And there’s no reason not to try training without them…”

“Yes, there is a reason!” I snapped.
