LAUNDRY IN THE SHOWER

Glowing red eyes stare up at me from the tree line, and the sound of my mother screaming fills my mind.

I flinch back and slam the window, then yank the drapes shut.

Immediately, a knock comes from the bedroom door, and the chair under the handle moves. “Rowe? Is everything okay in there? Did you fall in the shower?”

My heart races at the sound of Haut’s voice, and the realization I can’t be in the shower and out here at the same time.

The chair moves as he tries to come in to check on me, but it sticks against the carpet, doing its job in keeping him out. Not that that door is the only way into this room.

After a moment, his footsteps move farther down the hall, and I rush into the bathroom, diving behind the shower curtain with my shirt still on.

Tris gives me a wide-eyed stare. “Wha—”

I slap a hand over his mouth just as the door on the opposite side of the bathroom opens. “Rowe? Are you okay?”

“Didn’t I tell you not to come in here?” I demand while pressing a finger over Tris’s lips.

He nods and flattens himself against the shower wall.

“I heard a thump.” The shower curtain twitches, and I grab it before Haut can open it.

“I’m fine,” I say as Tris edges down the tub, farther away from the showerhead to stay out of view.

Haut pulls harder on the shower curtain. “I’d like to see for myself.”

Frown in place, I pull it back just far enough for him to see me. “Happy?”

His moss-green eyes skim over me. “Why are you wearing a t-shirt in the shower?”

“It was dirty.” I lift my chin. “Are you going to give me flack for the way I do laundry?”

His eyes drop to my chest. “Nope.”

I look down to see that the water turned the fabric transparent and plastered it to my body. It makes me feel more exposed than when I was actually naked in front of him.

Confident, he reaches out to cup my waist. “Do you need some help doing laundry? I can show you the art of the delicate cycle.”

My pulse flutters, and only Tris’s sharp pinch keeps me focused. “I can do laundry on my own, thank you very much.”

His nostrils flare. “I’d like to see that.”

My mouth opens and closes for a second. “I’m not sure where to go with this metaphor, so you should just leave now.”

“If you insist.” He gives me another long, assessing look. “But if you want to tumble dry, you know where to find me.”

“You’re good at this,” I acknowledge, then tip my head toward the door. “Now, get out.”

His chuckle fills the bathroom as he leaves the way he came, and I lean out of the shower far enough to turn the lock on the adjoining door like I should have when we first came up here.

“I admit, he has serious game,” Tris whispers. “You’re going to fall hard.”

“Shh.” I pull the shower curtain closed. “He’s probably still in the bedroom.
