Chapter 12

Welcome To Florence

“Welcome to Florence,” the flight attendant greeted as they passed through the jetway that led into the airport.

There was a lot of noise around them as people shuffled about with their carry-on bags and personal items. Violet stayed close to Chef Gavin as they followed the directions to the baggage claim area. Violet held her purse tight and her small carry-on close to her chest.

“Relax, nobody is going to snatch your things from you,” Chef Gavin said, laughing.

“It’s been so long since I’ve been in such a crowded space; I need to learn to get used to it again,” Violet replied.

They found their bags and then went in search of their driver. They found a smiling middle-aged man waving at them with a sign with Chef Gavin’s name. They walked to the man and shook his hand. The man knew who to look for as he made direct eye contact with Chef Gavin.

“Mr. Cavanaugh, Miss Montgomery, welcome to Florence,” the man chirped.

“Thank you, Herman,” Chef Gavin replied, reading the name tag on the driver’s jacket.

He took Violet’s carry-on bag, placed it on the cart with the rest of the luggage, and led them through the crowd to their waiting black limousine.

“For the rest of your stay, I will be your driver. Just let me know where you need to go, and I’ll be there,” Herman said.

“That’s generous of you, but you don’t have to do that,” Chef Gavin replied.

“Oh, it’s courtesy of the culinary institute hosting this world event.”

They entered the luxurious stretch limo, and Herman took them to the hotel they would stay in. It was about 40 minutes from the airport and had a line of expensive and exotic cars parked outside. Violet made a safe guess that this was a very swanky hotel. Herman approached the front entrance and helped the bellhop load their luggage onto a carrier.

“I will let you get settled in and see you soon,” Herman said.

“Don’t you have a number to call if we need you? Instead of making you wait all day on us.”

“Company rules, I’m afraid, and it’s no bother,” “I will be parked just outside near the front entrance with the rest of the private drivers. I will send you a screenshot of the license plate so you can find me easily.” Herman smiled and waved goodbye to them.

“That’s an odd rule,” Violet commented as they entered the hotel.

The place was mind-blowing, beautiful, and intricately designed for luxury. Violet couldn’t believe she would stay in such a fancy place for the next three weeks. She loved her job more each second. They approached the reception desk, where a woman was on the phone. She politely acknowledged them and said she would be right with them.

“Welcome to Nil Hotel Florence,” she said as soon as she finished the brief call.

“Hello, I have a reservation for Cavanaugh and Montgomery?” Chef Gavin told the receptionist.

“One moment, please.”

She tapped away at her computer. The receptionist opened a drawer and brought out two key cards, which she activated by inserting them into a little machine next to her monitor.
