Wrapped in a sheet, Sophie sat by the window and thumbed through her sketch pad. Muscles she didn’t know she possessed ached with the glorious feeling of fulfillment. She tucked her hair behind her ear and glanced toward the bed. Charcoal in hand, she began to sketch Alex’s magnificent naked form. He would most likely be out for a few hours, at least. A smile tugged at her mouth. He’d insisted she spend the night. She only gave him what he’d asked for.
Unfortunately, she got more than she’d bargained for in the process. A new and frightening emotion. Desire. Not physical, for he had satisfied her craving in that respect. Alex had tapped into her heart and left her with the longing to be more to him than a vacation fling. But where did she fit into his orderly, structured life? They lived in different states, different worlds. He’d made no promises and she’d asked for none.
Smooth move, Sophie. That’s what you get for not listening to your mama.
She should have known that Alex was trouble the moment she went crashing into him. No, she knew before coming to The Sanctuary, but she’d ignored the warnings in the cards, in the tea leaves. Why?
A feeling of restlessness settled over her. She tossed down her sketch pad and rose from the seat. A brisk ride would clear her muddled thoughts. She plucked a yellow rose from a vase on the desk and laid it on the pillow next to Alex, then left through the bathroom door that connected his room to hers.
She dressed in jeans and Alex’s Yale sweatshirt and slipped quietly out the kitchen door. The grass shone with a fine layer of dew. The air smelled sweet and clean. She pushed her sleeves up to her elbows and strode across the driveway toward the stables.
The jangle of keys caught her attention and she turned to see Damon near the garage. She smiled and waved to him.
“Hey, Soph.” Seeing Damon up and about before noon was a surprise. He crossed the lawn and joined her.
“Just getting home?” she teased.
“No. I’m taking my mother to a charity breakfast at the club.”
Thankful that he didn’t plan to break routine and spend the day with her, she exhaled in relief. She raised a hand to her forehead to shield her eyes from the morning sun. “I’m glad to see you’re getting out and around on your vacation.”
He grinned knowingly. “I guess you are, too.”
“Meaning?”
“I came up to talk to you when I got back last night. Guess what?”
“What?” she asked innocently.
“You weren’t in your room.”
“I wasn’t? You should have checked the salon. There was a good movie on TV last night.”
“You expect me to believe that a woman who doesn’t own an ‘idiot box’ on principle was glued to a movie? Nice try, but I did check. As a matter of fact, the only place I didn’t check was Alex’s room.”
She shrugged and said nothing.
“Come on, Soph, you’re wearing his clothes.”
She slid her hands in her pockets and leaned against the paddock fence.
