Kyla opened the door in her mind expecting the same small space, with the bed and window but the room had changed. There was more space. The bed seemed further away, while the window had grown on the wall. She raised her eyebrows at the Oracle, who was sitting at a small table in the middle of the room-one that had never been there before.

The Oracle’s eyes shone bright red as usual and the black silk gown she always wore, seemed extra-long around her bare feet. The Oracle’s arm outstretched, indicating for Kyla to sit on the other side of her. Without speaking, Kyla did. She looked down at the table and saw a stack of photo albums.

Kyla’s photo albums.

Kyla frowned. The Oracle opened the first one and turned it for Kyla to see without saying a word of explanation.

It was a picture of her mom placing the garnet necklace around her neck when she was born. But it was different. This copy wasn’t like the one she’d had in her own album. The baby in this picture, didn’t have blue eyes. They were red.

Pushing her drunk uncle to bed. Seeing her father’s body taken away. Every single moment, she remembered feeling like she couldn’t do it, was captured, and her eyes were red. Kyla closed the book and looked up at the Oracle who watched her expressions intensely.

“Why are you showing me this?” Kyla whispered.

“To show you that I have been waiting here, locked inside that necklace admittedly, but still watching. Helping. Your whole life. As part of you, those times that your human half was going to back away or couldn’t find what it needed to get that little bit further, it called me out. Sub-consciously Kyla, you knew I was here. I had to wait until you unlocked your human half enough to let me in like I am now, but my point is, you used to let me out, all the time, to help. And I did. I didn’t hurt or harm or kill anything I wasn’t meant to. I just got the job done, whatever it was.” The Oracle bared. Kyla sucked in a breath as the Oracle tried to earn her trust. She just wasn’t sure what to do. She knew trusting the Oracle needed to happen to save Sky, so she wanted to with everything she had, but how? Despite the proof sitting
