“You know her?”

All of us look at each other dumbfounded. We mumble among each other.

“What do you mean?”

“She’s a First One.”

We’re all confused.

Chad, Uve, Sapphira and I say, "No freaking way! That’s impossible! There are only ten First Ones. She can’t be one!”

“Oh please! I recognize my kind. Why is she exceptionally beautiful?" he says with pride. First Ones have rare beauty. She’s has nothing but angel blood in her veins, and she can do everything a vampire can. She doesn’t kill, hunt, and feed on blood. She has multiple abilities, and she’s fascinated by blood. Did she mention her heritage?"

“No,” I mumble.

“She doesn’t know her heritage yet. She will. I’m sure the Ancient Ones," he says sarcastically and gestures an air quote, "will tell her in time.”

It all makes sense! I flash back to her beauty, strength, telling the future, and speed. As I’m about to more questions, Jared interrupts me. “No time for questions.” We’re all quiet. ‘My other nine First Ones and I are an endangered species because someone leaked our blood properties.’ He looks at Chad.

“It wasn’t just me!”

“That is not what I heard. Don’t use your ability if you can’t control it!” He turns to me, “We need protection.”

“Yes, we’re aware, and we have no idea what to do. Jared, you and your brothers, have always been sought out for your blood according to rumors. What is the difference now?”

“True, but there was never evidence leaked by someone who had contact with First Ones. They look at you and Chad as a confirmed source. These savage vampires will be relentless.”

Of course, Jaleel has to go starting stuff. “Your issue sounds like a personal.”

“Is it?" he steps close to Jaleel’s face? "Is it a personal problem when you’re dead? If we all die, so do you, my children.”

Jaleel rolls his eyes and gets quiet. He is intimidated. Who wouldn’t be? They are unusually strong. Bagen, who taught Chad and me, says it’s like squashing a grape. After my thought, Jaden looks at me smiling because he just read my thoughts. I look away in embarrassment.

“What do you want, Jared?”

“Protection.”

“And how are we supposed to protect you?” I grill him.

“I know you’re serious about not upsetting the balance and protecting your life. Make the First One girl protect us. She is capable!” he roars.

Jared gets ready to walk away, and Chad pulls at his arm, “Wait, one question.”

Jared looks at Chad’s hand on his arm, and Chad removes it quickly. Jared calmly turns around and waits. He seems patient, but they are the evilest vampires, legend has it.

“Kleric said he was led to the map and why did Priest Chisley make a copy of it?”

“Priest Chisley lost faith in mankind’s ability to repent and get rid of us. There are two original spelled copies. He had stolen one of the originals before the Vatican found out. As far as the Vatican knows, there is only one copy.
