Chapter Thirty-One

Noble sat in a rusted iron chair on the back porch watching the final traces of sunlight slip into the night sky. A silvery slice of the moon hovered over the roof of the house behind theirs. The air smelled like a restaurant’s dumpster when the adjacent grease trap was overflowing. It killed the serenity of the moment.

Bear had turned in earlier. Not for the night. The big man made that clear. He needed a little shut eye. They decided they would alternate watch. The earlier meeting with Farah had left both men uneasy. They left with the feeling she’d just as soon gut them as their enemies. How much did she know? Did she know where they were staying?

The meeting had ended with an agreement to meet at the same location twenty-four hours later. The idea didn’t sit well with Noble. What if she had been followed? What if the people they were there to rescue O’Neil from were watching Farah?

“You’ll drive yourself crazy with the what-ifs…” He heard his old man’s voice as clear as if the Colonel stood right behind him. There was wisdom in his words, but Noble also figured there were times you had to contemplate the actions of your enemies. His father would agree, and he knew it. Right now, Noble and Bear were closer than they had ever been to a set of enemies who would relish the chance to torture them for every ounce of intelligence they could squeeze through their broken limbs before beheading them and sharing the footage with news outlets around the globe. God forbid they earn their notoriety in such a manner.

He grabbed a sweating glass bottle off the side table and took a long pull of malted liquor. The bitter taste lingered on his tongue like spoiled olives. He swallowed hard, then took another drink, stopping mid-sip after a series of bangs on the front door.

“Who the hell?” he muttered, wondering if a prying neighbor had spotted the two Americans and wanted to get a closer look.

Four more knocks rang out in quick succession.

Noble rose and twisted at the waist to see down the hallway. What he wouldn’t have given for a window cut in the door or placed next to it. He set the bottle on the table and stepped inside. The air outside had managed to cool enough that it now felt warmer in the house. He slid a dining chair in front of the back door to keep it open. Might be useful if he had to make a quick escape. Of course, Bear wouldn’t have much of a chance. He stopped by the stairs and considered heading up to wake the big man.

The visitor knocked again, louder and longer than before. If Bear and Noble hadn’t managed to draw attention to the safe house, the person outside surely had by now. With one hand he lifted the lid covering the security system panel. The other flipped the three door locks, then turned the knob.
