Short-Lived Super Star

Eta Carinae is probably the most extraordinary blue variable star in the Milky Way. It illuminates with 4 million times the power of our sun, yet it is only 100 times larger than our sun. There are only about twelve stars out of the billions in the Milky Way that reach that strength and size. Stars that size are getting close to the Eddington Limit: the point where the outward force of the nuclear reaction is stronger than the inward pull of gravity. In 1843, Eta Carinae went ballistic, producing a near supernova explosion that made it the second-brightest star for a few years.
