“I think more snow is coming,” Isa said softly.

Slowly, strolling a little, they walked to the parking lot. It was an open sky. The snow reflected the light of the moon. The daytime temperature had flirted with the zero-degree mark and here and there the snow had melted, but now an icy mush had formed as it was freezing again.

“I like snow,” he said.

“Me too,” she admitted and saw him kneel next to a pile of snow lying on the sidewalk. He took off his leather gloves, reached out and pulled a trail in the shallow snow. The tiny snowflakes on the tip of his fingers would be gone in no time, but he couldn’t stop staring at them.

“Each one of them is so unique... that shape... it’s perfection in every way. You know there’s something called the Koch snowflake. It’s one of the earliest fractal curves described... already at the beginning of the twentieth century. It’s just so fascinating.”

The flakes had disappeared. Only a few drops of water remained, and they ran down the shafts of his finger. He turned around and saw her smile.

“For a moment I thought the romantic in you was going to get the upper hand, but I was wrong,” she replied.

Why did he seem to disappoint everyone, all the time? People had expectations that he never seemed to fulfill. Why had he said this out loud? It must have seemed strange to her. But there was a moment between them. The same enchanting and tantalizing vibe he had felt in the apartment. He didn’t know how to behave or respond to it. Was she expecting anything?

The concern on his face worried her. Maybe she had gone too far. They weren’t friends; they weren’t even acquaintances. He was so much harder to read than she had expected. Had she said something wrong?

“It’s a joke,” she explained.

“I know. I... I need to go.”

Escape was the only way.

“Let me drive you home,” she proposed and walked over to him.

“My car isn’t that far from here.”

“No... thank you... I want to walk... thanks again for a nice evening. I’ll think about what you said.”

With a faint smile on his face, he turned around and walked away from her. She watched him slowly disappear from view and then walked to her car.
