CHAPTER 4

REVEREND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. LEADS: THE MORAL LEADER IN THE FIGHT FOR EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was involved in the American civil rights movement long before the 1964 Civil Rights Bill became law. He had provided excellent leadership during the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott initiated by Mrs. Rosa Parks’s refusal to obey a Montgomery, Alabama bus segregation law. Many believe that Dr. King’s historical speech during the 1963 march on Washington strongly influenced the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Dr. King’s 1963 speech certainly galvanized more people into the civil rights movement, making the movement more diversified.

Many, many individuals contributed to the civil rights movement, but this book focuses on General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—today often respectfully referred to simply as “Martin.” This chapter is about Martin’s leadership and contribution to the civil rights movement. Martin provided force to a nonviolent movement. He always seemed to be overflowing with creative thinking and inspiring articulacy—qualities evidenced by the enduring popular reaction to his oratory, including his famous speech during the 1963 march on Washington, his “Letter from the Birmingham Jail,” and his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

This chapter is divided into sections covering the following:

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Journey to Nonviolence: his Early Life, Education, and Marriage.

The successful use of nonviolent resistance in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Birmingham Campaign, March on Washington, and 1964 Civil Rights Bill;

The Selma Campaign and the 1965 Voting Rights Bill; and

The shift From Segregation to Discrimination, including the Poor People’s Campaign and Fair Housing efforts, the Assassination of Dr. King, and the 1968 Civil Rights Bill.

The Chapter Summary reviews the major points of Chapter 4.
