Caroline White (left front, seated), posing with members of the International Anti-Vivisection Congress, worked behind the scenes, but was a powerful force in the early animal rights movement.
Whiteâs husband, Richard, took a seat on the board. But because she was a woman, White herself remained in the background, working to build the organization and recruit new members. To help give like-minded women more of a chance to participate in animal welfare issues, White started a womenâs branch of the organization, focused first and foremost on rescuing abused and stray dogs. The women raised funds for the first animal shelter built in the United States, which is still in operation outside Philadelphia.
