If you are lying on your back, keep your entire back in contact with the floor while taking a deep breath in and at the same time, feel your sternum (breastbone) moving away from your spine. If you are sitting, while taking in a deep breath, you can lengthen your entire back and keep it in contact with the support, or you can even press slightly against the support, again while feeling the sternum moving forward and, at the same time, your upper torso moving slightly back. Awareness of the movement/expansion of the torso in all 360 degrees of its round shape will bring about more efficient breathing.

The ribcage is constructed to respond to the expansion and contraction of the lungs. The sternum is composed partly of cartilage, as are the connections of the ribs to the sternum. Cartilage is not as solid as is bone and it has some degree of movement. The bottom two ribs are not even attached to the chest in the front, allowing for the largest amount of expansion as they are situated closest to the breathing muscle, the diaphragm.

Take in a more normal breath and pay attention to the sensation of the air coming in both nostrils, how it brushes the back of your throat, then reaches your windpipe, or trachea. Does the air pass through each nostril equally?
