Chapter eleven
It was a bit of a tight fit getting the four of us into the truck. I slid over to sit next to Eric on the bench seat with Mannix by the door. Old trucks aren't really meant for more than two bodies. Felicia shifted down into her fox form and curled up on Mannix's lap. Her fur threw off tongues of false fire that dissipated before they did any damage. I could see the amusement in her eyes at the way Mannix was holding himself, as if he was worried about getting burned.
Fire Foxes are not shifters or really Other kin. They are a magical race that has more in common with the Fae than other beings. Incredibly rare, they are usually found in places much different than eastern Canada. The Tuya Volcanic field was supposedly still active, if remote and it would not surprise me if she came from there.
The drive from the Healers home to mine took place when traffic had picked up in town. Having spent a good portion of the day unconscious or asleep I found I was hungry. I thought back to the supplies in the house and realized that with four more mouths to feed we would need to do a grocery run sooner than later. âEric, we need to stop at the market.â
He nodded, âCostco or No Frills?â
âI vote for Costco. They have ribs on IRC right now.â Mannix answered for me. I shrugged and nodded when Eric shot me a look. He got onto the 400 and headed toward Mapleview. Traffic, like I said had picked up. People were starting to come home from work, so it was slow, but we managed to get into the store with plenty of time to shop.
I winced at the bill after we filled the cart with meat and fruit. âWe should get fish for the kids and whatever it is a fire fox eats.â
Felicia smiled at me and held up bags of salad mix along with what looked like an industrial kitchen sized bag of hot peppers. âThis will be perfect.â
âMore for you,â I made a face. I have never been a fan of hot food, but I understood. After all she was a creature of fire and probably ate lava when she had access to it.
Packing everything into the bed of the truck, we finally turned toward home. You would think after all the time out cold that I would be rested, but I was tired. I had managed to grab some of the samples from the young artist who was the newest hire. She had been working the store for the past six months and I made it a point to stop and say hi when I could. She had been born back in Nashua and she had come here with her mother, the Storyteller, ten years ago. While she couldn't spend too much time chatting, she told me about her baby niece and then handed me one of her sketches. She had a lot of talent and I wondered if she knew she had magic in her hands.
