Later that afternoon Samantha looked up the answer to her final question. The day after the bombs at the Festival and the kidnapping, the global stock markets remained on the ascendancy, but the Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME) and Bolsa de Madrid (IBEX) in particular, which were already in decline, fell precipitously and continued falling for the rest of the week, not necessarily prompted by the deaths at the Festival or the abduction of a senior U.S. State Department official, but the fall confirmed a loss of confidence and control. The decline assured that whoever bet against these regional markets would, depending on the size of the position, make a lot of money.
