Chapter 18

Julian clears his throat and tosses a polite smile my way as he says, “Thank you, little flower, for telling me, I mean. I have to take this.”

And then, after my own little version of spilling my guts to him, I’m left standing alone in the middle of the gym dance floor. I stand there for a few moments, confused and vulnerable, until I decide to do what most people do in these situations and make my way to the bathroom to hide for a bit.

I look around the gym after I’m done, ready to push him. To hear what I need to hear, because I truly believe he feels the same way but is holding back for some unknown reason.

But Julian is still nowhere to be found, so I decide to check the halls. When I turn down the second corridor, his voice echoes toward me before I round the corner. However, I stop dead in my tracks when I hear what he has to say to whomever he’s speaking.

“It’s going well… They've been tracking her and her parents for a while, but I’ve been guarding as often as possible and left my scent all over the place… How do you know? Are you sure?... No, it’s a sure thing, she told me she’s falling for me… My feelings are in check, I know my mission… When?... Okay, I’ll take her and run… Alright, I love you, bye.”

Julian looks up and sees me peeking around the corner. He grabs my wrist and pulls me toward the exit. I pull back.

“Who was that? Where are you going?”

His voice and body language are urgent. “We have to go. I need to get Jared’s keys. Wait here.”

He runs back into the gym, and I follow, eyeing him as he explains something to Jared. His hands wave in animated fashion. Jared reluctantly hands the keys to Julian, while Julian pulls out a wad of cash and stuffs it into Jared’s shirt pocket. Kelsi looks at him, mouth agape. Her eyes meet mine in shock and confusion.

“I don’t want to leave,” I protest as he grabs my wrist and drags me after him.

“No time to argue, little flower. This is serious.”

“Then explain to me what’s going on.” I pull back, but it’s no use.

“I will. On the way.”

Hesitantly, I follow him out the door and down the steps that lead to the senior parking lot. Julian’s eyes dart all around as he propels us forward and hovers a hand around my waist, leading me protectively, and opening the passenger side door for me. I slide in and buckle up before turning to glare at him. “Explain.”

“You’re in danger. We’re in danger.”

“With whom?”

“Remember the people who were after me on Tigrine?” I nod. “They found us. They found us a while ago, actually, but I’ve been holding them off. Now, they sent reinforcements. A whole team.”

“So, what does that mean?”

“We have to run.”

“For how long?” I ask.

“For good. We have to lose them and then go to Tigrine.
